چکیده

This paper presents an interpretation based on gamma-ray burst source kinematics for the relationship found by Norris et al. between peak luminosity and energy-dependent pulse lag. I argue that the correlation should instead be between number luminosity and pulse lag. This interpretation improves the least-squares fit of this correlation for the known bursts by 25 percent or more. It also suggests a distance estimation scheme. I propose that this relationship is due to the variation in line-of-sight velocity among bursts. This interpretation allows one to speculate on the range of gamma-ray burst expansion velocities or the size of their jet opening angles. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts — gamma rays: theory

Connection between Energy-dependent Lags and Peak Luminosity in Gamma-ray Bursts

We suggest a connection between the pulse paradigm at gamma-ray energies and the recently demonstrated luminosity distribution in gamma-ray bursts: The spectral evolution timescale of pulse structures is anticorrelated with peak luminosity, and with quantities which might be expected to reflect the bulk relativistic Lorentz factor, such as spectral hardness ratio. We establish this relationship...

Peak Luminosity-Spectral Lag Relation Caused by the Viewing Angle of the Collimated Gamma-Ray Bursts

We compute the kinematical dependence of the peak luminosity, the pulse width and the spectral lag of the peak luminosity on the viewing angle θv of a jet. For appropriate model parameters we obtain the peak luminosity-spectral lag relation similar to the observed one including GRB980425. A bright (dim) peak with short (long) spectral lag corresponds to a jet with small (large) viewing angle. T...

Connection between Energy-dependent Lags and Lorentz Factor in Gamma-ray Bursts

We suggest a connection between the pulse paradigm at gamma-ray energies and the recently demonstrated luminosity distribution in gamma-ray bursts: Spectral evolution of pulse structures is anticorrelated with quantities which may be expected to reflect the bulk relativistic Lorentz factor, Γ, and therefore intrinsic luminosity. We establish this relationship in two important burst samples usin...

A Simple Two-Parameter Characterization of Gamma-Ray Burst Time Histories

A simple scheme delineates Long GRBs with similar time histories using the Internal Luminosity Function power-law index and the spectral lag. Several generalizations are made about time history morphologies: 1) GRBs with long spectral lags contain fewer pulses that are broader than those found in bursts with short spectral lags, 2) short-lag bursts with small ILF power-law indices have many nar...

The Connection Between Spectral Evolution and GRB Lag

The observed delay in the arrival times between high and low energy photons in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been shown by Norris et al. to be correlated to the absolute luminosity of a GRB. Despite the apparent importance of this spectral lag, there has yet to be a full explanation of its origin. We put forth that the lag is directly due to the evolution of the GRB spectra. In particular, as the...
